Hail

Large hailstones can reach speeds of 100 mph by the time they reach the ground. If you are caught outside during a hailstorm, quickly seek shelter inside a building while protecting your head from the falling hail. A direct hit to your head could knock you unconscious.

Substantial structures and highway overpasses (out of traffic lanes) offer the best hail protection. An awning, a gas station overhang, or even an unexposed side of a building can also offer protection.

If you can’t find something to protect your entire body, at least find something to protect your head.

Stay out of culverts and lowland areas that might fill suddenly with water.

Trees are a last resort. It is common during severe storms for trees to lose branches. Also, large isolated trees attract lightning.
