Emergency

Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan

Background

Taxpayers pay billions of dollars each year for disaster recovery in the United States. Some events are predictable, and often, damages can be reduced or eliminated. The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires communities to develop an approved local hazard mitigation plan to remain eligible for certain federal funding.  The Polk County Emergency Management Commission has done so and has invested in mitigation planning and mitigation projects since 1999. The latest 2024-2029 Hazard Mitigation Plan for Polk County is currently "Approved Pending Adoption." Adoption by the Polk County Emergency Management Commission is anticipated in November 2024.
